The Flume’s
Extra 5K Run/Walk

In Bailey at Fitzsimmons Middle School

Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009

10:00 a.m.

To benefit
The Platte Canyon High School Cross Country Team &
Children with Developmental Disabilities in Park County

As part of The Flume's Fourth Annual Holiday Extravaganza at Fitzsimmons Middle School on Nov. 21-22, this year we are having the Third Annual Extravaganza 5k Run/Walk. The Flume is helping to coordinate the race in partnership with cross country coaches Jeanie Boymel and Todd Larsen and Colorado Springs-based The Resource Exchange, the Community Centered Board for El Paso, Park and Teller counties that helps children with developmental disabilities.

The Extra 5K takes place in one of the most beautiful settings for a school campus in Colorado. Family and friends can watch much of the race from the hill in front of Fitzsimmons Middle School as runners loop through the field across the highway. Bring your binoculars. After the race, you'll have a chance to do your Christmas shopping and enjoy the food, crafts booths and entertainment at the Holiday Extravaganza, at Fitzsimmons from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 21 and 22. Forty percent of gross proceeds from the Extra 5K will be split 50/50 between the Platte Canyon High School cross country team, through coaches and race directors Jeanie Boymel and Todd Larsen, and children with developmental disabilities in Park County, through The Resource Exchange.

The Prizes - $2700 in prizes for the top 42 runners in 14 categories and drawing winners. Each first place in 14 categories gets a $100 gift certificate from Platinum Sponsor Hutchison Lumber, located in Pine Junction, Fairplay and Florissant. The best overall male time and female time each gets an extra $50 Hutchison gift certificate. Each second place gets a $50 gift certificate from Gold Sponsor Lucille's of Jersey Italian Steak House in conifer. Each third place gets $25 cash from Silver Sponsor Mutual of Omaha Bank in Conifer, Evergreen and five other Colorado locations. Plus, $150 worth or drawing prizes will be awarded.

To reach the starting line Directions from Denver: Go southwest on U.S. 285 to Fitzsimmons Middle School, which is on the right-hand side of U.S. 285. It is 3.6 miles west of downtown Bailey, which is about 40 miles southwest of Denver. Use the last entrance into the school complex. Directions from Fairplay: Go northeast of U.S. 285 about 35 miles, a little over a mile past Shawnee, and turn left into the school complex at the first entrance encountered.

Course The course is a combination of cross country and road race style. We stay on the school property entirely. We start at the old football field just east of the pool entrance at Platte Canyon High School. We run around the old high school track, around the back of the east high school building, down the sidewalk area and in front of the new high school and middle school, down to a road crossing where we cross U.S. 285, run through the open hay field where a trail is cut, around the track, again through the hay field, up the bleachers, cross the bridge over U.S. 285, around the old field and school again, and finish in the middle school parking lot area!
